If you’re a fan of DC Comics’ Batman, you may find yourself wanting to channel your inner crime-fighting vigilante from time to time. Batman tends to be many people’s favorite superhero because he’s evidence that to be a superhero, you don’t need superpowers. Fortunately for those who love Batman, there’s one day a year that is dedicated to their fandom.

When Is Batman Day?

batman day

This year, Batman Day will be on September 26th, 2018. This will be the fifth year of the official Batman Day holiday, which DC comics introduced as a way to celebrate Batman’s 75th anniversary. The Dark Knight first appeared in May 1939, in Detective Comics #27. Since then, he has grown in popularity tremendously.

A year after creation, Batman picked up his comic book line. A few decades later, in the late 60s, Batman was brought to television sets around America. In the 90s and 2000s, Warner Brothers worked to produce live-action Batman feature films. For many, these films brought Batman into the mainstream. Because of his soaring popularity, this year’s Batman Day could be one of the best yet.

Last Year’s Batman Day

On the dedicated holiday last year, DC Comics had also announced that they would celebrate Harley Quinn’s 25th anniversary as well. Harley Quinn, otherwise known as the Clown Princess of Crime, has been a fan-favorite archnemesis of Batman ever since she made her debut in Batman: The Animated Series. Since then, Quinn’s popularity has grown. Her comic line now features:

  • A best-selling comic book series strictly dedicated to her
  • Toys and Collectibles
  • Graphic Novels

By combining Batman’s celebratory day with Quinn’s last year, it certainly made for a day that many would not forget. Last year, DC Entertainment paired with schools, libraries, retailers, and bookstores go give away various merchandise to fans, such as free comic books and Batman and Harley Quinn masks. There were also many talent signings across the country.

DC Comics was able to create such a memorable day of celebration because they worked with Warner Brothers expansive network. There are many companies that Warner Brothers considers to be Consumer Products licensees, including Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, and Scholastic, among many others.

These participating partners were able to take advantage of digital and retail marketing in celebration of Batman’s anniversary. Warner Brothers also worked with these partners to produce a digital activity kit for younger children. By using this kit, children gained access to games, coloring pages, and Batman masks that they could print at home. Retailers used these kits to host unique Batman Day events.

Last year, DC Entertainment also provided users an interactive map, which they could use to locate an event near them. The company also provided a schedule of talent signings set to occur across the United States. Popular signees included:

  • Frank Miller, author of many Batman comic books
  • Klaus Janson, credited colorist of many Batman comics
  • Andy Kubert, Batman comics artist

Unfortunately, DC has not announced if they will celebrate both Batman’s and Quinn’s anniversaries on the same day this year. If so, many are in for a treat again. But, if not, there’s no need to worry, as celebrating Batman’s anniversary is unique in and of itself. Batman fanatics should still be able to find plenty to do as a way to honor the Caped Crusader.

How To Celebrate Batman Day

If you are looking to channel your inner superhero, celebrating Batman Day in September is your day to shine. But, if you’ve never observed a superhero’s holiday before, you may be a bit curious how to go about doing so. Here are some of our team’s best recommendations for how to celebrate this unique Batman holiday this coming fall.

Dress Up

No matter what events or signings you attend, you’ll be sure to see people dressed up in their favorite Batman apparel. And why not? This is the one day that you get a free pass to do so! Since it’s set aside specifically for Batman, September 26 is the one day out of the year where you can put on a black cape and mask and roam the streets of your local Gotham.

Even if you don’t plan to wear a full costume around all day, you should at least consider something like this t-shirt and mask combo from Amazon. The product has a four-star rating and comes in three different sizes. It’s made of 100% polyester and is machine washable so that you could use it for future Batman holidays.

Get Caught Up

In the weeks leading up to Batman’s celebratory day, we suggest catching up on all things Batman. Whether it’s reading the latest comic books or watching your favorite films again, there’s no better way to get in the crime-fighting spirit than to remember why you fell in love with Batman in the first place. Perhaps consider a “binge weekend” in the days before September 26.

Of course, if you don’t have time to read or watch movies before September 26, you could always spend the day doing so. But, also remember that numerous events take place throughout the country that you may want to partake in as well. These events are mass Batman fan club gatherings, and there’s no better way to celebrate the holiday than by spending it with other fans.

Batman Day Events

Hopefully, DC will soon release another interactive map announcing their plans for the Batman holiday. If not, a simple internet search for Batman events near you should do the trick. At these events, you’ll find thousands of people dressed up in their favorite Batman apparel. Many people come in full costume, makeup included.

Even more so, not everyone comes dressed as Batman. Although much of the day is dedicated to celebrating the legend of Batman himself, remember that the character is part of a broad series with many different characters. At these events, you’ll find people dressed as Batman’s sidekick Robin, or Batman’s primary enemy, The Joker. These events tend to be a celebration of the entire series.

In the past, these events have had vendors who give away things such as comic books for free. People who have attended Batman festivals in the past and have said that they are an excellent way to surround yourself with like-minded people and celebrate the superhero who you love the most. And, scoring some free merchandise in the process doesn’t hurt, either.

Complete The Activity Kit

As mentioned previously, Warner Brothers pairs with their business partners to produce an activity kit in honor of the special day. Last year, they changed the kit from a Batman Activity Kit to a Harley Quinn Activity Kit. As a point of reference, you can find last year’s package here. In year’s past, Warner Brothers produced a kit solely dedicated to Batman, which we hope they’ll do again this year.

Completing the activity kit can be great fun for people of all ages, but it will likely be particularly fun if you have children in your household. The activity kit contains numerous projects that are sure to keep children busy for hours while embracing their inner super-hero. One of our favorite activities from last year’s package was the do-it-yourself Batman utility belt.

Expand Your Action Figure Collection

If you’ve collected Batman action figures over the year, there’s a good chance that your collection is not complete. Each year, DC Entertainment releases new action figures. Furthermore, they tend to release at least one new figure everyone in conjunction with Batman’s anniversary. Whether you purchase multiple action figures or just the newly-released one, the holiday is a great time to do so.

Participate In Social Media

Social media makes it easier than ever to connect with other Batman superfans, and there’s no better time to do so than on Batman’s anniversary. You can follow along with the day’s events @DCComics on social media sites like Instagram and Snapchat. They may live-stream specific events, which can make you feel as though you were there even though you’re hundreds of miles away.

Meet Famous Batman Influencers

Each year, DC Entertainment sets up signings featuring people who have been influential in the Batman series. Now, famous Batman actors like Michael Keaton or Christian Bale are not the ones signing autographs at these events. Instead, it’s people who put in work behind the scenes to help make the Batman series successful.

At these signings, you’ll have the chance to meet authors and illustrators who were influential in creating the Batman series. For many superfans, these signings provide access to people who they had never considered meeting before, providing a unique perspective. There’s no better way to celebrate the holiday than to meet the people initially tasked with bringing Batman to life.

You never know what you may learn at these signings, either. For example, were you aware that Robin was originally only supposed to appear in one comic book issue, and then disappear? Or, did you know that it wasn’t until the 1940s that Batman began to gain the superpowers and mystique that sets him apart today? Many fans find signings on Batman’s anniversary to be quite the memorable experience.
